Planning for the care of your artwork and preservation of your artistic legacy can feel like an overwhelming task. But the more you know, the better prepared you will be.

This page is currently incomplete, but I am planning to populate it with publicly accessible resources. Until then, I’ll skip to the good part and just recommend the very best:

The Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Creating a Living Legacy program is the gold standard for information about legacy planning. The materials available on their website, including workbooks and tutorials, will help you feel informed about this process, and offer strategies for doing productive work. I especially recommend the Estate Planning for Visual Artists workbook, which does an excellent job covering estate planning topics in a way that is tailored to the needs of artists.

I also recommend taking a look at the Artists’ Legacy Foundation website. They are an organization primarily devoted to preserving the legacy of a few select artists, but part of their mission is to work with the community to enable artists to plan their legacy. Take a look at their resources page.

I’ve also put together a questionnaire, Getting Started with Art Legacy Planning. You don’t need to have done any research to get started - it asks about your artwork and career, and I hope it will help you set intentions for your legacy work.
